The region of Bucovina is located on the northern slopes of the central Eastern Carpathians and adjoining plains. The name came into official use in 1775 when the region was annexed from the Principality of Moldavia by the Habsburg Monarchy and then controlled by the Austrian Empire and later Austria-Hungary. But over the centuries, the region has also been subjugated by the Romans, Goths, Turks, Nazis, Russians, and others, and now is split between Northern Romania and Southern Ukraine. 'Souvenirs of Bucovina' is divided into two 80-minute acts which explore the history of the region, its enduring culture, the oppression of gypsies, the slaughtering of Jews in World War II, decades of Communist rule, and life since the democratic revolution of 1989. close

From the untold history of America's largest early immigrations, this half-hour documentary tells the story of 19th-century Saxons who settled in rural Missouri. Unprepared for the harsh conditions of America in 1838, and dismayed by the scandal of their leader Martin Stephan, they persevered to sow the seeds for one of the world's largest bodies of Lutheranism today. close

A feature length documentary about the great American composer, artist, writer, activist, Lou Harrison (1917 – 2003). It is the intimate portrait of a great composer who followed his own dreams for over seven decades. Trading a fast-paced New York career for a remote cabin in the woods, Harrison embraced artistic playfulness over the business of composing. Experimenting freely with western, eastern and custom made instruments Harrison forged a new course for 20th century music. close
