The film takes place in 1644, when the Ming Dynasty is on the verge of destruction. Emperor Chong Zen hastily issues an imperial decree ordering Crown Prince Zhu Kilang to hide in Nanjing in the hope that he will one day ascend to the throne with the help of surviving ministers and supporters. The empire is burning on both sides: on the one hand, a rival dynasty is trying to seize territory by war, on the other - the rebels of the South intend to declare their own puppet - "Emperor" Hong Guang - as emperor. Both sides compete ruthlessly, trying by any means possible to capture the prince and the imperial edict he carries. In an old house in Hanoi, Bi, a 6-year-old child lives with his parents, his aunt and their cook. His favorite playgrounds are an ice factory and the wild grass along the river. After being absent for years, his grandfather, seriously ill, reappears and settles at their house. While Bi gets closer to his grandfather, his father tries to avoid any contact with his family.
