A BAFTA award nominated animation based on a poem by Earle Birney and a painting by El Greco. The theme concerns the responsibility of the innovator for the thing he makes. In the film, a carpenter builds a cross but is reluctant to become involved in the right or wrong of situations that bring men to die on crosses. His interest is in his own craftsmanship. To illustrate this moral, the filmmaker used light-pen drawings, giving colour and emphasis through optical processes. close

Two bodies lying in the road. A hauntingly sterile emergency room. A girl crying out for her Father: God. One by one, all of the players in her life, more
Two bodies lying in the road. A hauntingly sterile emergency room. A girl crying out for her Father: God. One by one, all of the players in her life, angels and devils alike, emerge and illuminate how she ended up in this liminal consciousness between life and death. It is both in this consciousness and her previous existence that she begins to understand why God had forsaken her and how she can be redeemed. Dreamlike, visceral, and at times surreal, It's Hard to Be Human elegantly poses the age-old questions of what it means to be human and how to have a connection with the Divine in a fallibly human world. close

How safe is the future of the world’s food? This documentary explores a growing crisis in world agriculture. Plant breeding has created today’s crops, which are high yielding but vulnerable to disease and insects. To keep crops healthy, breeders tap all the genetic diversity of the world’s food plants. But that rich resource is quickly being wiped out. (NFB) close

The fur trade is Canada's oldest industry, but today some people challenge the morality of killing animals for their fur. This film examines the public more
The fur trade is Canada's oldest industry, but today some people challenge the morality of killing animals for their fur. This film examines the public relations war raging between the industry and its opponents and takes an objective look at the ethical, environmental and economic issues raised by the debate. The struggle to win over public opinion has been joined by Indigenous peoples in Canada who fear that their way of life will be jeopardized if the fur industry is destroyed. The cycle of the industry is followed from the trapper's bush camp and the fur ranch to the final sale of a coat in the furrier's salon. Throughout the film, the conflicting opinions of fur industry representatives, animal rights activists and Indigenous people challenge the viewer to consider all aspects of this complex debate. —NFB close

Irreverent, mean, politically incorrect, often vulgar and sometimes even rude, the inexhaustible and irresistible humor of Rock et Belles Oreilles marked Quebec society in the 80s and 90s. Nothing has escaped this cultural phenomenon: radio, song, personalities, great events and social phenomena have fueled this delirious humor, so biting and so funny because more true than life. Reflecting a generation, RBO has obviously contributed to giving humor its letters of nobility within Quebec culture. 3rd of 5 DVDs in the box: Rock et Belles Oreilles: THE BOX AND THE BONUS close
