Soldier Paul Marchand notices that the train stopped near his home village, where his father, mother and fiancée Marie live, from whom he has not received news for two months. Paul begs his friend and direct commander, Sergeant Lecker, for an hour of freedom. He runs to the village, finds his mother in church, and learns that his fiancée no longer lives with her.
