Max is a stage struck youth, and because of a deep-seated desire to go on the stage, refuses to consent to a marriage his father has planned for him. The girl, whom Max has never met, is also stage struck, and entertains no wish of marrying him, though her mother is anxious to see her make the alliance. The parents finally manage to bring the young people together, and they, in turn, exert all their skill in an attempt to disgust each other. An accidental meeting between the two when they are off guard causes them to change their minds. close

A musical short film about the extermination of Roma by the Nazis during World War II. One of the first directorial works of Tony Gatlif and the first in which he addresses directly to gypsy themes. In fact, all those elements from which Gatlif will build his famous films in the future are already presented here: ethnographic documentary, fantastic musical “pressure”, attention to the dark pages of history (the Roma will be remembered in Swing as well), the fate and inner strength of a person; a fierce speech against social injustice.
Perhaps that is why the plot of the tape is extremely simple, even schematic. Roma are sitting in a concentration camp, behind barbed wire and trying to use flamenco – “song and dance” – to express their protest, to ignite themselves to fight. These expressive musical numbers, performed in the French-Spanish "narrhechia", however, are wordless. The first number is actually a protest. The second is the laconic statement “I am a gypsy.” The third song is based on the phrase “Run the gypsies, live the gypsies”. Thus, the nomadic image of gypsy life acquires the maximum weight from Gatlif, as the only possible form of existence, and “flight” becomes a life victory. Although, of course, it can be viewed melancholy as a defeat, a lack of strength to fight.
I don’t think the German overseers need translation either. These are monosyllabic orders. Their execution is clearly illustrated by the director. In addition, they are on the "heard" of anyone who has seen at least one picture of the horrors of World War II. close

"Max quarrels so with his wife that the lady leaves him. Our hero then attempts to do his own cooking, etc. He buys a fowl, but it proves to be still alive, and after he has chased it with a revolver, partly plucked it, shaved and finally half-roasted it, the bird is still alive and wings its way off. Max next turns his attention to blacking his boots, upsets the liquid blacking, spoons it up, and a minute later is using the same spoon to stir the broth. He writes for his wife to return home, but soon after sending the letter hears he is heir to a large fortune, and lives in the seventh heaven of delight - until his wife returns." In 1928, as the talkies threw the film industry and film language into turmoil, Chaplin decided that his Tramp character would not be heard. City Lights would not be a talking picture, but it would have a soundtrack. Chaplin personally composed a musical score and sound effects for the picture. With Peter Lord, the famous co-creator of Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit, we see how Chaplin became the king of slapstick comedy and the superstar of the movies. close

The German legend of a scholar's unholy pact with the Devil would have been very familiar to most moviegoers (at least European ones), so Georges Méliès' early cinematic treatment likely got away with simply offering a fancifully illustrated late episode without the earlier narrative context (however, spoken narration provides some of the latter in this restored print). Tempted by Mephistopheles with all kinds of dancing and ethereal babes, Faust is at first excited and then terrified by the sight of various demons and monsters. The painted-set designers really went hog wild on this one, depicting the (sometimes sexy) torments of subterranean Hell with in bold terms (even when ballerinas prance in the foreground). This short film is Godard’s message to the people of Lausanne, specifically journalist and critic Freddy Buache, addressing his reasons why he will not make a film about their town’s 500th anniversary. Rather than cynical or defensive, Godard's bemused narration of the footage of Lausanne is imaginative and even playful, a rumination on cinema's possibilities. close
