An opera by Antonio Vivaldi, long considered lost. The performance was staged in 2006 at the Spoleto Festival.
Libretto Giacomo Bussani in the treatment of Alessandro Ciccolini represents the ninth feat of Hercules of the twelve, the purpose of which was to obtain the belt of Hippolyta - the queen of the Amazons, giving superhuman strength. Hercules, having gathered the Greek warriors, went to Temescir, the capital of the Amazons, on the Thermodonte River. The Amazons meet them according to all the rules of martial art, captivate Theseus and burn a fleet of ships. The Greeks capture the queen’s daughters. The Amazons light a sacred bonfire to sacrifice the goddess Diana Theseus, but the latter has defenders who talk about the feat of hunting, and he is released. In the course of the confrontation, Greek hero warriors and Amazons fall in love with each other. Queen Antiope eventually gives the sword and belt to Hercules and announces the betrothal of Theseus to Hipolita and Alextis to Martesia. A well-coordinated choir singing in the name of love resolves the conflict between the Greeks and the Amazons and ends the action. The production, frankly, is unusual... Vivaldi first staged this opera in 1723. The involvement of women in stage activities was strictly prohibited by the decree of the Pope. That has created a great demand for castrats. Vivaldi was no exception and attracted seven to his production. Moreover, they performed not only female roles, but also the roles of associates of Hercules. Some castrates in Vivaldi played Amazons, i.e. women muscularized, almost androgynous. Others played men but sang in female voices. In the course of the play, couples actively develop love-erotic relationships. In the midst of all this fun there is a real man-warrior - Hercules himself - that the authors of this production emphasized, dressing the hero in a small skin, revealing all the advantages of a warrior. But the courageous Hercules at the end of the opera, it seems, fell under the charm of the queen of the Amazons. The opera was filmed at the 49th Spoleto Music Festival.
The film contains erotic scenes. close
