Summer of 1945. Gynecologist Andrzej Kwiatkowski, mobilized as an army surgeon, serves as a captain in a unit in western Poland. Having successfully operated on Colonel Kizior of the Ministry of State Security, he gets an extraordinary week's leave and goes to Warsaw. On the ruins of his house, Kvyatkovsky meets his former neighbor, Kristina, with whom he immediately falls in love. During dinner in a restaurant, he gets into a fight with a Soviet officer and, wanting to get out, introduces himself as a colonel - vice minister of state security. Thus begins the adventures of Colonel Kwiatkovsky.
