Mind games Perhaps nothing attracts the film as one line streaming set of names: Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and even Jeff Daniels in addition! Regardless of the genre, you have to see it! Only a little-known director who gathered such a composition in such a film can alert, and still managed to create a good twisted thriller from Kevin McDonald.
The story is a puzzle mosaic, assembled in small details until the most final coups. It would seem that everything is already clear, all the points are arranged, and the result is about to not keep itself waiting, when suddenly everything turns upside down, presenting the final twist with an unexpected denouement so beloved by Hollywood today. The whole concept looks quite attractive, because it is thanks to it that the film does not look long or boring, but constantly gaining momentum. And a strong acting of the highest category shows on the screen everything that is required from a political thriller with a strong detective line.
Something particularly new here will be difficult to see, but on the other hand, cinema, especially modern, is not full of a variety of political thrillers, and even more so, few of them can boast of stars of such magnitude. Brilliantly embodied characters who are generally quite problematic and cause a variety of feelings about them. It is difficult to search for right and wrong, it is difficult to divide into good and bad, when all the true goals and motives are revealed, when you see the already formed essence of the character of each of the characters of the film. The same conflicting emotions remain after watching. I want to once again dig into the whole story, review in desperate attempts to find a semantic shade of what is happening and try to understand what the viewer should have learned, and you end up with your own problems, surrounded by the same complex and contradictory people of everyday life that surround each of us, whether politicians, or policemen, or journalists conducting their own investigation.
Many similar to this film with Fincher’s “Zodiac”, especially the general range of colors now and then refers to the thriller about the elusive maniac. At the same time, of course, there is no maniac, and the murders are contracted. But this does not change the essence of the investigation, just as it does not make the characters themselves more direct and clear. According to the entanglement of the tangle of the plot, the "Big Game" will even be superior, besides, we are not stuffed with constant facts and dates, but are told more artistically and detached from reality.
There is no drive, action and sophisticated special effects here, of course, and even insert them nowhere. Everything rests only in the brilliant ability of the acting talent to play something interesting by the plot itself, developing into a story that everyone is trying to unravel. But each one of them has their own way and pulls a blanket over them. As a result, not everyone will find someone to sympathize with, and someone will even say that the “unpredictable outcome” here is so banal and predictable that you should not even try to make such a turn. I liked and surprised the film, managed to distract all its timekeeping, immersed in the skins of the characters on the screen and their Big Game, the game of detective investigation, the game of the mind of politicians, the game of big money in various spheres of power, where they are tossed under a variety of pretexts, reminding what really rules the world, even when it comes to friendship, love and other human qualities.
