For centuries, Peru was home to highly developed civilizations of the Andes. Here, the Inca kings, worshipping the sun, ruled a huge empire that stretched for more than three thousand kilometers at the foot of the mountains of South America. In 1532 it was destroyed by the Spanish. Fleeing from their crumbling world, the upper class of the Incas found shelter in the hidden jungle of inaccessible mountain ranges.
