Uninvited guest A film about a female dormitory for the male half of the youth, such a phrase can be characterized by a new slasher, which is also a remake of the classic representative of the genre. “Sorority row”, the prospectors of our magicians of translation crafts branded “Scream in the dorm”. Apparently hoping to elicit associations with the slasher "Scream" or for some other purpose, but she sounds like a fool to God. However, unsuccessful localization for our country is a frequent phenomenon and you can close your eyes to all this if you try.
Everything that a traditional slasher should attract is available in the film in the proper volume and a good balance. Nothing out of the ordinary or super-original is foreseen, but the film deftly modernizes the history of the classic film and manages to even keep in suspense during the most intense moments and murders. The latter, by the way, is enough and their originality and diversity amaze against the background of machinations with the pickaxe “Bloody Valentine”, machete equipment “Friday the 13th” and classic chainsaw “Texas massacre”. The gun itself already inspires the proper horror, since nothing like this has ever been seen anywhere else. A homemade thing, with a set of blades fits well into the style and is very suitable for history. Such a modernized murder weapon will find repeated use, and murders will not be limited to them at all. But when you watch all these spectacular attacks, you feel like you forgot to give out 3D glasses at the entrance. The visual is simply created for a three-dimensional format, it is in this film that something should constantly fly out, stick out and bulge into the hall. But unfortunately, the authors decided otherwise, and this moment affects the perception. It feels like a home viewing of the above-mentioned slasher “My Bloody Valentine”, when in the movie there was an amazing game with the hall, and at home “clearly something is missing”.
But all of this is offset by really well-staged scenes of violence. A lot of blood, a lot of originality, sometimes you don’t even know if a character is going to be killed now or not. Sometimes you are amazed by banal ideas and primitive, used a thousand times, staging. However, the film does not set the task of pronunciation of any new words in its genre, make discoveries and make new steps. Everything is within the framework of slash-horror with proper attributes, and therefore the film is able to please rather only big fans of this direction, and the main audience will say that “all this, I have already seen”.
A small company of girlfriends commits an accidental murder on an uninvited prank, after some time an uninvited guest at a party - a certain figure in the dark, begins to kill one after another all those who are aware of the unfortunate event. Again, nothing new in concept, everything from the classic Graduation Ball to the modern and popular I Know What You Did Last Summer. To guess a real maniac is both easy and difficult. The circle of suspects is not large, and as such, there may not be a shock in the end. After all, this finale works best when the viewer, suspecting everyone and everyone, intentionally diverts thoughts from the character who turns out to be the main villain in the end. When you are already fully confident in his positivity, when the denouement is already in the palm of your hand, everything turns upside down. But these are not works of the great Dan Brown, to miraculously and pleasantly shock amazing twists, and not even “Saw”. And therefore the guarantee of hitting the point is quite high, but the denouement remains interesting with a good idea to explain the reasons and questions that arose during the review.
In style, the film looks like the work of a novice artisan. Everything is in principle good: there is a classic plot, important canons of the genre direction are observed, murders are well shown, there are many half-naked girls, there is a final turn. The face is full, and lacks a brighter highlight. If, for example, Neil Marshall had only female characters in the Descent, this created a certain feature and a very interesting concept, and here in the Sorority row, with all the accents on the female dormitory and a bunch of heroines, the male characters came out in sluggish and inappropriate pillars without special memorable features, and even some attempts to introduce reason and character into them look rather poor and scanty, while the girls are painted candidly and clearly, each is full of its individuality. This is not a classic set of glamorous "Bratz" and absolutely not "Hannah Montana". We see not just a set of empty stupid blondes and not even a team of furious bitches, we are served a very diverse cocktail, where there is room for almost everyone. In some places, these characters are template in moderation, sometimes much more interesting. But most importantly, they are all alive. The actresses coped wonderfully with the presentation of each character, the girls came out very real and really found in life in large quantities with all the difference in types. Something annoying, something attractive, the heroines are realistic and diverse, each came out as a bright and memorable person, causing certain feelings in the viewer. But you can see the emphasis on the male part of the population, as if the film was actually made for guys. Here it is also worth mentioning the colorful attractive appearance of each, with female casting things are just fine.
Stuart Hendler showed how he works with horror. This is his second attempt in the genre after Whisper, but if there was an aspect to mysticism, then here it came out in the best traditions of the slasher. Yes, in fact, this is such a “next horror” without watching which – well, you absolutely will not lose anything, but on the other hand, if you like horror films and in particular such a direction as slashers – then the film you should like and like. That’s why I advise horror fans and slash-movie, who this year something came out like a huge pack, to the delight of me and all the fans. A good representative of a good genre.
