I know it’s a children’s movie, and it’s 1984. And yet, it is sprinkled with sugar, and this tried to cover obvious holes. The plot is very simple - the hero goes without knowing where and why, but he still succeeds, because he constantly meets those who do all the work for him - the turtle told where to go, the dwarf - how to go, the dragon took, the sphinxes told what to do, the wolf laid out the essence of the problem, and the queen solved it. The film, however, justified the plot - after all, the point was to involve a boy reader in what was happening. But there are many holes in his story - the banal theme that he was beaten in school, the stolen book he did not return, the nature of the bookstore owner is not revealed. He was reading a book in the attic of the school, and it took him a whole day to do it, and no one was looking for him, and he himself does not consider it something strange. The boy reader too suddenly ousted the warrior boy from the plot, leaving him no room at the end. I didn’t like some of the technical details – Atreyu couldn’t get through the gates of the sphinxes just with the purity of his soul, he had to just run away from the eye lasers – what’s the problem, if they can simply run or it’s better to ride a horse? Nevertheless, the story is of course beautiful, epic, with meaning. All three children play well. When I saw it as a kid, it seemed like the best children’s movie I could think of.
