What Hoffman does in the frame, every action or inaction in every second is a game. Compared to the mass of actors who try to play only face. Streep did great. But that's where the problems come in. By performance, she plays either a woman with a mental disorder or a bullied victim. But there is nothing in the story that justifies this image. We have never been told what Joanna is suffering from. Just a forgotten spouse does not pull on what they show. But it could have been much better if the script really matched the image. I expected the film to focus on the conflict between the two spouses and their development, but no. Spouses collide in the course of action at very short intervals.
Another big drawback is a direct, arrow-like narrative. When you watch the scene, it is immediately obvious what sequel it is setup for. Why? The principle of “trouble does not come alone” in the film is shown elegantly. And the hero is interesting to watch, he really empathizes.
The last and major drawback is what the film loved - sentimentality and family. The problem is that they are carefully dosed so as not to overdo it. So that the viewer can cry a little and calm down, give a happy ending. What if Romeo and Juliet had married and lived happily ever after? It would be Kramer versus Kramer. But the creators were afraid to offend the viewer. Too bad the movie could have been much better. Without the cast, there would be a passerby.
