Luxury!

But dangerous.

But luxurious.

What do I do?

How to choose?

How many?

The novel "Dangerous Liaisons"?

A lot, a lot.

But let's look at this one for now.

He's even scolded.

Sometimes.

And it's too cruel, and not like a book.

And too "correct" - because here you can immediately see where the good and where the evil.

I don't know, I don't know.

I really like the singer Milena Farmer (see epigraph).

She likes this movie.

I like it so much that she even wrote a song based on it.

And if a movie touched someone so much, it can't be bad.

The acting is good, as is the directing.

It begins as a sweet joke, smoothly turns into tragedy, and ends with remorse for one side and a lesson for the other.

Sweet and ugly Viscount and Marquise are deeply vicious, but their charms are difficult to resist.

But what do they do to people and to themselves?

Even then, life could have been built differently.

It's a warning novel.

He's supposed to be edifying.

He has to show what is good and what is bad.

Director Stephen Frears managed to convey this message very accurately.

But at the same time, the film is elegant.

And not losing relevance now.

For a very long time I went to this movie version of Dangerous Liaisons, and only now I got there. Maybe because I've already seen a different movie version - Milos Foreman's "Valmon," which I love a lot, Frears's tape didn't come to me. At all. I looked with difficulty, and then only because I knew what was what, but I wanted to see the author's submission: the plot of this film was more tired than intrigued. Or maybe the movie didn’t fit into my mood. Whatever it was, for me this recognized masterpiece, which disrupted both the high ratings of critics and the box office, turned out to be inappropriate. Perhaps, the audience in the late 80s gravitated more to sinister dramas on the verge of a historical thriller than to light, atmospheric and at the same time very meaningful stories, therefore, “OP” surpassed “Valmon”, but in my rating it is exactly the opposite.
Here they have already said before me - the film adaptation of Frears is kind of dead, it smells like a grave, and this immediately, from the first shots, causes rejection and dislike. The same cold and dead almost all the characters - except that the elderly aunt alive, though older than all others. The rest ... literally bear the imprint of corruption, moral and physical decay. Again, to return to comparisons, Foreman’s film is simply bubbling with life, excitement, curiosity... Here - only the grave cold, pathological cruelty and indifference.
Casting is strange, although symbolically clear: the characters symbolize what they should represent ethically. But nevertheless, it is amazing to look at the hero-lover, who is disgusted by his appearance. It is not an evil thing, but an evil thing. The same is true of the Marquise with close-set eyes. Is it around these characters that such an obsession is born??
The film is full of not even drama, but tragedy, the further the more, it is very heavy and not so much what is happening on the screen, but precisely the atmosphere of the cemetery.
Pros - thoughtful and deep, there are no omissions in the details. Cons are everything else.
I'll go review Foreman.

Dead souls...

Before watching this movie, you should clearly feel that you are watching. Even after repeatedly watching other versions of this work, among which were both successful and vice versa terrible, I still do not fully understand the meaning of everything. More precisely, what is the main idea, and the idea is quite clear, but why? Why put all this confusion on the screen? It doesn’t even seem to fit a little in my head. The film, you can say, even some, if not a child, then not an adult for sure. It's a very sweet idea of the film itself. On the other hand, one might ask, “What is the film about?” And here, too, the answer will not immediately pass to mind. About the "cream of society" games of those times? Or perhaps about the terrible nature of the human soul of the “cream of society” of those times? Anyway, what am I saying? The film is very multifaceted, and it’s wonderful.

Eighteenth century France. Viscount Valmont and the Marquis de Mertey lead a dangerous game fraught with broken hearts and crippled fates. The Marquise, wanting revenge on his longtime lover Gercourt, promises Valmont his favor if he seduces Cecil Volange, the young bride of Gercourt. Instead, Valmont is carried away by Madame de Tourvel, completely forgetting about the contract, and the Marquise has to find workarounds. Unwittingly, the ruthless heartthrob Valmont falls under the spell of the virtuous wife of President Tourvel, thinking about the price that will have to pay all participants in the intrigue.

And the most interesting thing is that after watching it, you can really say that the film is not about anything. But why does everyone like him so much? Because he's truthful. Choderlo de Laclos, when he wrote his novel, I am sure, and in his thoughts did not hold to make some “fantastic story”. After all, he himself lived among the society of that time, and I am sure that he knew how people, in the absence of televisions, computers and everything else, entertained themselves.

You can talk about the meaning of this film for a very long time, since I have already said that it is multifaceted. One may not understand all the motives of the main characters, but it is clear that they are all selfish, and even the same Valmont, who at the end of the film still repented, still remains that rotten soul, like the same “cream of high society” from Gogol’s novel “Dead Souls”, who were indeed dead, but nevertheless lived on our land.

In the cast you can see a lot of famous personalities. Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, Swoozy Kurz, Keanu Reeves, Uma Thurman...

Summarizing the film, I will say that this is the best adaptation of the novel by Choderlo de Laclo, which I have seen. Unfortunately, I haven’t read the novel, but I’m going to do it at the first opportunity. I liked this film, but I still think that the events taking place here are somewhat exaggerated.
