The main character is a great guy, a wonderful family man, intelligent and honest Sergeant Dave Banion takes up the case of the death of his colleague Tom Duncan, associated with the main local mafia Mike Lagana. But the sergeant will find out later. In the meantime, it would seem, and the case is over - traces of gunpowder on the hand and temple of the dead man leave no doubt about suicide. But very quickly Dave calls the girl of the street profession Lucy Chapman, the former mistress of the deceased. Confident that Duncan was helped to die, she recounts Duncan's strained relationship with his wife and his country home, which is unlikely to have been bought on police pay. The next morning, Chapman’s tortured body is found in a ditch.
Sometimes corrupt and sometimes cowardly police officers do not like that Dave continues to dig this case and bothers Tom Duncan's widow with questions, by the way, a very important defendant. The sergeant is threatened first, and then his wife is killed by mistake. Next is the investigation of our hero, who has already been removed from work, reinforced by the desire to take revenge on the murderers.
If Lang were to shoot his film now, it is likely that the producers would not allow him to do without heavy shooting from all types of automatic weapons and other attributes of modern cinema, which increase entertainment, but reduce the emotional contact of the viewer with the hero. And so, one explosion, a few hand-to-hand fights and a few shots — a modest seasoning in order to make a good realistic story about the good and bad guys.
