It's a very sprawling movie. First you look at the credits for 3 minutes, then at the fluttering of algae throughout the river, at the contemplation of the nature of the Moscow region, 4-5 minutes Burton travels along Japanese highways (maybe in the 70s for the Soviet viewer it was an appropriate picture of the future?). And all these contemplative insertions without dialogue, without reflection, without anything. You only get to the key dialogues after 1.5 hours of viewing. When the movie could have ended.
And even in 2 hours 46 minutes, the director gave the viewer a very crumpled view of Solaris. Time was wasted on nature and highways. Banionis liked the game, but was not impressed.
