In 1863, the January Uprising lasted on Polish lands. From the battlefield near Malogoshchi, a wounded rebel Josef Odrovonz escapes. Hunted by Russian soldiers, he tries to find shelter. Farmers from nearby villages refuse to help him. He is helped to escape by a young noblewoman Salome Brynicka, the daughter of the estate manager, also a rebel. There is sympathy between young people.
