“Sweet people swear – they only laugh” – this proverb applies to the relationship between the well-to-do peasant Gerd Tapken and the hostess Catherine Girken, who quarrel with each other constantly, but secretly love each other. However, it comes to a serious showdown when Tapken shot Katrina’s cat for allegedly eating three chickens. The woman is outraged by such cruelty and involves her lawyer in the case. There will be a trial, as a result of which the peasant must be subjected to a monetary fine or even imprisonment. . .
