The art of seduction Provocateur, vulture, hooligan – as soon as the famous Serge Gainsbourg was not called, and even being to some extent the truth, it could not disrupt his main title – a creative genius who turns into masterpieces almost everything he touches with his soul and full dedication. Romantic and without five minutes mad, he won many hearts, seduced so many girls and women, created a number of bright musical masterpieces and made several magnificent films.
Now they're making a movie about him. And although the main attention is paid here not so much to the life of the famous chansonnier as to his inner world, the film manages to combine incompatible things in an hour, turning the incredible into the real, and the real into simply incredible! And all this is woven into something so beautiful and fragile that even quietly you begin to get nervous, and do not start to flirt with the topic of Nazi persecution, arranging exposure and shootings at every corner, and whether there will be too much Doug Jones in his Freak outfit, whether the biopeak will turn into a gloomy fairy tale, but thank God all even the slightest fears are completely in vain, and history skillfully marches on the most key points of the biography.
At the same time, to reflect each area of activity here, it seems, the task still did not stand. Since focusing on Gainsbourg-artist and Gainsbourg-musician, playing every detail through the rich personal life of the hero-lover, in the end we have almost nothing about Gainsbourg-actor and Gainsbourg-director, and the subject of relations with his daughter does not go beyond one small scene, leaving a certain part of family relations behind the scenes, including even the fate of two sisters of Serge, who simply fall out of the narrative, grow up and never appear in the future in scenes of family dinners and conversations, like a brother. But what eventually gets into the frame is an already fascinating and rapid immersion for as much as 130 minutes of timekeeping, which even seems a bit small when the titles appear.
Gainsbourg is presented so bright and charismatic, to become directly the film that all his expressed talents immediately fit the epithets and characteristics of the film as a whole. The art of seduction, attracting both eminent women and young nymphets, provocative music with a thirst to earn and become famous, absolute self-confidence and a rich world of fantasies, divided into two sides of the personality - and much, much more, capable of hooking and captivating into the atmosphere of that era. In the atmosphere of Gainsbourg and his work, deep into his personality and thoughts, which will not be fully understood, no matter how hard we try.
Casting here turned out to be above all praise, which simply cannot be noted. Whether the authors of the film aspired or not, but all the actors are so outwardly similar to their real living and living characters to this day that you are amazed! Eric Elmosnino is like Gainsbourg, Lucy Gordon is just like Jane Birkin, and Leticia Casta spectacularly serves Brigid Bordeaux! This is not all, almost every person who appears on the screen and played a certain role in Serge’s life is almost an impeccable copy of the one he plays, and even Charlotte in a small episode so resembles the true famous actress, who recently grabbed the “best female role” in Cannes for the masterpiece “Antichrist”, that you are amazed at the selection of so many amazingly similar and yet perfectly accustomed to the images of actors and actresses. Well, of course, Doug Jones with an eternal thirst to play off anthropoid monsters, once again already serves an extremely spectacular monster - the alter-ego of Gainsbourg.
This alter ego cannot be considered a creative beginning in the soul of a famous genius. Like a demon temptor, he, of course, sometimes helped to take bold steps, provoked desperate actions that eventually made Serge a celebrity, but in every creative trifle, the true Gainsbourg manifested himself, even banishing his black half for the sake of normal life, not leaving his pomp, courage and giftedness. The theme of duality is just perfect, and presented in such an original and fascinating manner that each scene together is always an unforgettable show. Sometimes, the alter ego arises so suddenly and unexpectedly that it turns the scene into a fantastic surrealism, at other times you are already thirsty - well, when it shines again on the screen and they light up side by side under the musical accompaniment or converge in an interesting dialogue.
An interesting free fantasy of Joan Sfar on the life of Serge Gainsbourg is a sensual canvas full of atmosphere, penetrance, eroticism, musical numbers, almost turning the picture into a musical with its quantity. With characters you sympathize with and whose fate is watched with great interest. Elegant and delicate work, done with full dedication and maximum investment of the soul in the work. With some petty questions, this is an ideal masterpiece in all respects without unnecessary details, with a reference frame and careful presentation. What is called is made with love, and such a rich and exciting movie is really fascinating! The perfect biopeak, the best ever created. Bravo!
