Size does not matter "Size does not matter" - it is of course about the "short meter" and not about the "the same".
The art of the “short meter” is not very common among a wide range of spectators, but in vain. As in stories, in a short film, not everyone can manage to reveal the entire plot. That is why stories are valuable, where the authors manage to accommodate the whole universe in a small segment of screen time.
“Under the streetlights” is the shortest “meter” I have ever seen (if anyone knows even more concise stories, please share).
I didn’t look at the timeline before watching. The goal - to pass a weekday evening for something easy - did not require any framework. And yet, in the final credits, the question-indignation arose: WTF???!!
As a result, 10 almost 9-minute episodes are watched in one breath.
Perhaps it’s all in the romantic era of the mid-90s (the action takes place in 1995), or in the main characters – stories about teenagers are always interesting, as is their world (if it’s not a “masterpiece” in the style of “American Pie”, “Achieve success and the like). Or maybe the detective component is holding you - who is the killer?
Of course, the advantages can be attributed to the new faces of modern cinema. I haven’t seen any of them before (because of their youth). Thank you to the creators, because now more often you go to the actor, director or brand, not to the film or series.
Anyway, the difference between "Under the street lights" and classic series with similar themes is the same as between fresh and "natural" juice from the store in the package.
In conclusion, if you have already read the "review" to the end, a little about the plot. In the first series, one schoolgirl sister was killed, secretly meeting with her teacher (it is funny that in the future Nabokov’s novel “Lolita” flashes in the frame). In the last episode, her sister disappeared and was found dead. Between these two episodes, we get acquainted with the world of schoolchildren in a small American town: their loves, tragedies, funny events from life. That's how it works. . .
The funny thing is that in the finale, when the killer is known (although his motives are very unclear), it becomes absolutely indifferent - who killed and for what.
Because the talent of the authors of the short meter is not in the plot (or not only in it), but in the ability to tell a simple story in a short time so that it is impossible to forget it.
So, guys, really in this case, 'everything genius is simple, and everything simple is genius' and 'brevity is the sister of talent'.
Do not expect much from this work and it will surprise you.
