The British miniseries based on true events is A Very English Scandal, directed by Stephen Frears in 2018. The film tells about the scandal that broke out in 1976, associated with the accusation of the leader of the liberal party Jeremy Thorpe in the attempted murder of Norman Scott, with whom he was once in a homosexual relationship. Jeremy Thorpe was leader of the Liberal Party from 1967 to 1976 and MP for North Devon from 1959. He had a connection in the early 60s, when it was still considered a crime in Britain, it was short-lived. Scott was a mentally unstable young man, then led a rather motley lifestyle, even managed to get married and have a child, however, his wife, convinced of his everyday insolvency, soon abandoned him. Thorpe also married and had a son, but his wife died in a car accident. He soon married a second time and lived with his second wife until her death, surviving her only a few months. Scott told many about his connection with Thorpe, even reported to the police, and wrote a lengthy letter to Thorpe’s mother. He kept insisting that Thorpe arrange for him to receive the Social Security card on which he depended for all benefits, but he did not. In the end, Thorpe, having decided that Scott is hindering his career, which was rapidly going uphill, decides (allegedly) to kill him. Everything was arranged through that very place, it is a pity that the dog died as a result. In the end, the case went to trial and it seemed that Thorpe's fate was sealed, but the lawyer who advised him not to appear in court, who had previously shown prosecution witnesses willing to cash in on the story, was evident in the material interest of the main witness, Thorpe's former friend, and Scott himself, as well as the judge in his unexpected speech to the jury who called Scott a darmooster, a whin and a parasite, played their part, and all the defendants were acquitted. After that, Thorpe’s career came to an end. Thorpe died in 2014 and Scott is still alive, Thorpe has always denied having any sexual relationship with Scott. It is not known how true the film, based on the novel by John Preston, is, but the screenwriter said that they were still trying to figure it out themselves. Thorpe perfectly played Hugh Grant, Scott - Ben Whishaw, who is openly gay. The film is not shot with animal seriousness, it is such a satirical and criminal tragicomedy, which is further emphasized by very interesting music. I must say that all the characters of the film do not look very smart and not very prudent people, leaving behind compromising evidence, sometimes in a completely idiotic way. The story is really very British.
