Saving a family from debt and eviction, but at the cost of a crime - robbing a bank - is it worth it? That's the moral foundation of the film. Both Eugene and Ellison understand everything perfectly well and knowingly commit a crime, to use weapons against other people - not only police officers, but citizens like themselves. And what's in their head if they're so consciously taking themselves outside of society? There in my head the country of dreams, the sea, the right to some kind of happiness, but in fact, no one has this right. From Eugene here, his sisters sculpt a victim, a seduced boy, an unhappy child without a father, and even allow him to retain some dream of Dreamland in the end. In fact, such "dreamers" should be brought down from heaven to earth, for the safety of those they can harm.
