The film by Valery Todorovsky “Odessa”, 2018. Recently, there have been reviews about it in various places, and the range of ratings has been very wide - from complete rejection to absolute admiration, which prompted me to watch, although I am very skeptical of retro films about the time that I still remember very well. I will say right away that I did not experience any excitement from watching. In my opinion, the script is rather weak. the film turned out to be very eclectic, sometimes implausible, but here it would be possible to attribute to the peculiarities of the author’s interpretation of his childhood impressions, if the narrative was on behalf of the boy, and the boy simply did not participate in many events. In the film, we are talking about a Jewish family - two daughters with families came to visit their parents in Odessa, as well as a son-in-law - the husband of a third daughter, who was supposed to arrive later, with her son, here a cholera epidemic falls on them and the city is closed for quarantine. The characters rather diligently portray the life and relationships of the supposedly ordinary Soviet Jewish family, but despite diligence, there slips a certain falsity and in some places playfulness. Many people praise Rozanova and Yarmolnik, who play quite age-related roles as parents - yes, they try very hard, but for Rozanova I am sometimes embarrassed for some reason, it is painfully diligently depicts the alleged Odessa conversation, sometimes switching to Yiddish, with makeup, as it seemed, they overdid it - she looks not a mother, but almost the grandmother of her daughters. They're all very heterogeneous. Gypsies, of course, as always plays Tsyganov, this time fell in love (almost platonic, but behaving at 40 almost like a teenager) with a 15-year-old neighbor girl, such quite a tear. Of course, conflicts arise in almost all families, that is, against the background of cholera, perhaps stirred up in them the thought of death, much suddenly breaks out and splashes out in a very boorish form. In the end, after all the events, probably (we don’t see this) everything settles down. Odessa there, of course, is not Odessa, filmed in other places, so the city is very glimpsed. But the final credits were especially impressive - the first in them were the names of Abramovich, Prokhorov and Baturina, who apparently financed the shooting. In general, I will not recommend the movie for viewing, decide for yourself whether to watch it.
