Nivkhs live on Sakhalin for more than 20 thousand years. This small people learned to resist the sea element, but the historical cataclysms of the twentieth century destroyed the ancient way of his life. The Japanese occupation of the island, forced assimilation, post-war repression of the Soviet authorities caused great damage: almost no nivkhs remained who know their native language, few people remember ancient traditions, rituals and beliefs. But all is not lost, Vladimir Sangi is sure. Writer, poet, co-author of the primer of the Nivkh language, who always dreamed of a national revival.
