The meaning of the title of the picture “innocent lies” or “lies to save” creates a sense of ambiguity from viewing. Young Katie fakes cancer (melanoma) clearly not in order to do something good. Maybe in order to raise money from donations, or to get a scholarship, or to somehow establish yourself - it is so nice to be in a special account with peers and teachers.
We'll figure it out... As a child, she lied in a similar way after her mother’s suicide to avoid going to school. Here, apparently, lies the "innocence" of such lies - innocence, first of all, from the point of view of Katie herself. She seems to have never grown up since then - the realization that she faces criminal liability for such deception falls on her like snow on her head on a summer day. And all because she continues to think like a child who is used to manipulating others. The death of her mother seemed to stop Katie’s development as a person. Isn’t that why she found a girlfriend, Jennifer, rather mature and serious, instead of a boyfriend, as if she had chosen a new mother? And the father who tries to communicate with Katie like an adult... But Katie isn’t going to grow up — she’s comfortable in this “pity me” state — and that’s why her father becomes her biggest enemy.
On the periphery of the plot, you can see the social conditions that help Katie remain a child - a doctor who is ready to confirm her "illness" for a fee, and some other media outlet who believes that Katie is being bullied on social networks. These are the contours of a “market” trading “truth.” And if a lot of money is pumped into this “truth”, then an infantile immature creature may well sue his own father simply for reminding her of his true abnormal state.
However, not everything is so bad - the "market" works only for the masses, but relatives - father and Jennifer - still can not always be deceived. The price in the game of turning “truth” into truth is the trust of loved ones, which you can no longer buy with anything other than a change in yourself. But judging by the end of the day, there are many, many more white and innocent steps to take.
