A very lyrical picture about the writer of middle-aged Mitsuo, which is at number 50 in the series of films about a cheerful character named Torajiro.
Mitsuo, the nephew of the deceased Torajiro, is now a widower and lives with an adult teenage daughter. The film is full of scenes-memories from Mitsuo’s youth, where the central place is given to his youthful love Itsumi and, of course, a lot of time is devoted to Torajiro, for whom the whole series of films was started. The emphasis on the scenes with Itsumi underscores the current state of Mitsuo, whose heart after the death of his wife began to disturb the memory of Itsumi. Both the scenes of the past and the present are shown in color, but the viewer literally from the first frames becomes clear when the director turns to the past - these scenes are taken from previous films of the cycle and clearly differ in color gamut and features of the frame.
Itsumi is now married and lives abroad, and their relationship with Mitsuo in the past was limited only to a few bold conversations. But Mitsuo’s heart somehow remembers them and echoes anxiety and sadness. Especially memorable is the episode in which Mitsuo at the train station accompanied Itsumi, but at the last moment suddenly jumped into the car and left with her, although, of course, he was not going anywhere. Mitsuo lacked words to express his feelings, which led to this act. After this scene, you wonder why he became a writer, not in order to master the word, which will help him someday after meeting Itsumi again, not to remain as silent as before?
In this film, Mitsuo will meet Itsumi. It will be a meeting of two adults who are no longer afraid to talk to each other. But, oddly enough, now some restrictions on free communication have the social status of the characters - neither wants to go beyond certain limits, realizing that they are a man and a woman from different families. They discuss the events of the past carefully enough, but a new understatement about the present arises, leading to a repetition of events - a breakup, a train station, a kiss - all almost the same repeated after many years. Almost - because this is now the last page of their relationship - the characters still find a few stingy words to dot the i and finally define the boundaries of their feelings.
