Again a British detective series and again based on a real story - Gardeners (Landscapers), 2021. In the mini-series (4 episodes) tells the real story of one rather strange couple who found mutual love at a not very young age, but on the way to improving the personal well-being of his wife who did not hesitate to kill her parents. Librarian Susan (Olivia Colman) and accountant Christopher Edwards (David Thewlis) met through a dating bureau and soon married, lived as they say, souls are not tea in each other, especially since their interests were similar in places - they both loved cinema, especially old films and loved to buy all sorts of rarities related to their favorite actors - posters, autographs, letters, etc., which cost a lot of money. And once, in order to reassure her husband, who was very worried about the death of his own mother (he also had an adoptive mother, who apparently raised him), and especially his brother, Susan arranged for him a “correspondence” with Gerard Depardieu, which lasted for many years. Money has the peculiarity of running out, and then, in order to improve their financial situation, they killed Susan’s parents, buried corpses in their garden, and everyone was told that the old people had gone to Ireland. They themselves continued to use their money, moved, and then left for France, where their financial situation was shaken completely. Susan had been out of work for a long time, and Chris couldn't find a job because he didn't know the language. And then he decided to ask for money from his adoptive mother, at the same time for some reason telling her his secret about the corpses, the adoptive mother immediately reported to the police, and, surprisingly, they soon surrendered themselves to the British police, naively assuming that they would believe in the version of what had been worked out and learned by them for 15 years by heart, but the wrong ones were attacked. The police, although they did not look like beacons of reason, but got to the information they needed, the couple was accused of a double murder and each was given 25 years, however, they still do not consider themselves guilty, they are people. To do so, they say, forced circumstances - the parents did not love their daughter, the father kind of even abused her, and in general the father was killed by his mother, and Susan just lost her temper and shot her mother when she began to insult her, that's only where the parents could have weapons, they came up with such a fantastic version that, say, the father was a hidden Nazi. They lived their entire lives in their imaginary world, especially Susan, who thought in terms of Westerns. The authors of the series do not hide the fact that the audience is shown a reconstruction of the events, and largely according to the version of the spouses themselves, I read their story, which is called almost 1: 1, in the last series during the trial everything was reconstructed for a Western, it’s like Susan’s thoughts. They do not look like villains, they are very much attached to each other, which causes some sympathy and even sympathy, which sometimes confuses them (Suzan’s lawyer), and believe that they can protect each other, and yet they are murderers. What's the name? One police officer tells his partner that his mother always said that in the family one of the spouses is a gardener (landscape designer), and the other is a garden. So which one is which? Looks like both gardeners.
The film, of course, for an amateur, there is no action there, but the actors in the lead roles are excellent and play well. Initially, the film was supposed to shoot Alexander Payne (About Schmidt, On the Roadside, Nebraska, etc.), it is a pity that he did not burn out with the schedule, but Will Sharp did not fail as a director.
