When in 1731 Abbe Preveaux wrote his novel "The History of Cavalier de Grier and Manon Lescaux", based on which the opera "Manon" was written, he depicted a whole portrait of that era of the Regency. The old order was gone, and from its ashes a new one rose, imbued with promises of unheard-of freedom.
