The history of the dynasty began simultaneously with the history of the state. However, the beginning is hidden in the thick fog of legends. We will never know who the legendary Varangian Rurik really was or whether he was a real historical figure. But we know who his descendants were. Among them were poets and warriors, saints and robbers, legislators and fratricide. Some ascended to the throne by birthright, others by invitation, others by the corpses of their brothers, but their very belonging to the ruling house of the Rurikoviches made legitimate their power over a huge country.
In the history of the dynasty there was everything - conquest and loss, love and betrayal, intrigue and new laws, a fierce struggle for power and high self-sacrifice, the ashes of fires and the creation of world masterpieces. The Rurikovichi strengthened, defended and expanded their state: some by fire and sword, others by peace and treaty. During their reign, the Russian nation was formed and the phenomenon of Russian culture arose.
