Fun film with a philosophical message I don’t like Pixar Studios at all. I didn’t like a single movie in the studio. There are exceptions, of course, but still. Of the short films, I didn’t like one at all. But that's different.
In general, I have seen only sugary, funny (not funny) short films, and not a single serious one. Perhaps only Alexander Petrov had truly philosophical (the Old Man and the Sea) and serious (all the rest) short films. And this film is perhaps the first short film that raises two themes at once.
The first is paranoid schizophrenia or, more simply, a split personality. A person who plays chess with himself looks rather strange. The second is the state of the human soul. Even in this movie. On the right, the man is sitting in glasses, slouching, the expression on his face shows sadness, you can see that he is already an old man. And on the left side, the same person, without glasses, sitting upright, hanging, you can immediately see that this is a man in full bloom. Even by the nature of the game it is clear that a person with a young soul wins in the course of the game, because to old age the mental abilities of a person are blunted. In general, the developers have come up with a great old age and youth.
But to some, this movie may even seem funny. There are a lot of funny moments, but personally I paid almost no attention to them.
Pixar’s best short film isn’t the best at all, but it’s definitely got it done. But I can't compare short films to movies. In general, as a short animated film, I put 9.5 out of 10, but as a film, 7 out of 10. In general, this is one of the few cases where a short film makes an impression.
