The absurd black dramatic comedy The Northerners, filmed in 1992 by Dutch director Alex van Warmerdam. Again, I did not see anything particularly comedic there, but there is plenty of absurdity. The action takes place in a completely strange place, in some area where it was supposed to build 2,000 apartments, but so far limited to just a few houses forming one small street. Around the wilderness, a small forest with a small pond, off-road, on Sundays, residents go by bus to church. However, as promised, each family settled there, received a separate apartment, or rather, even a house, these are row houses. There live rather strange people, in each hut - his rattles, in one family the husband Jacob (Jak Wouterse) is obsessed with sex, because of which his believing wife Martha (Annette Mallerb) eventually goes crazy, in another family just the wife is obsessed with sex, the husband is short-sighted, besides the sterile hunter is obsessed with protecting the forest, where he constantly runs with a gun, which ends badly for him. In addition, he feuds with a local postman, fond of opening and reading other people's letters. The son of Jacob and Martha Thomas (Leonard Lucier) is obsessed with Patrice Lumumba, who is caught in the Congo at this time, as they constantly talk on radio and TV, constantly dresses up for him and paints his face in a dark color, he is just friends with the postman. Martha’s madness progresses, she begins to listen to a statue of a saint standing in her bedroom, stops eating, she is declared a saint, people flock to her window from all around and kneel, praying. There are several other wild incidents. In general, the absurdity in which these people live progresses, crimes are committed. It was quite interesting to watch, but I can’t say that the film made a strong impression on me.
