Yes, this is a comedy, this is a comedy! Actually, the main point of my review is the title, so if you are tired enough of the film, you can not read any more. For the rest, let me explain.
I am often accused of not understanding humor. It is strange why, in this particular case, the viewers were mostly unable to see the obvious, although the half-severe, half-faint face of GG and the bleeding of the princess from the very beginning should have set everyone up in a cheerful way. It seems that the absence of the word ' comedy' in the list of genres... and some have already taken to watching, knowing about the extremely low ratings of the film. Of course, everything would be different, win 'Byzantine Princess' the prize of the Cannes Festival (in which she participated!) or, even more so, 'Oscar'. Then people would talk about subtle and peculiar humor, about the atmosphere, about the deep knowledge of authors in the field of ancient literature. And... again, they would be wrong! Since the knowledge here is rather superficial, and to everyone who has read the original source, it is clear that 'Tyrant' does not consist of one love line at all.
However, this does not prevent ' Byzantine Princess' to remain a deliberate parody of this work and knightly novels in general - more precisely, some of their features. Yes, these creations are really terribly long! Very few of our contemporaries are able to read the average knightly novel without adaptation (and I am not calling everyone to this masochism). Long pompous dialogue about nothing, endless chewing on the same topics - not the prerogative of Mexican & #39; soap operas & #39; it was in chivalric novels. And the false chastity of the heroes now causes ridicule. So Aranda is mocking at the same... and, quite likely, at the audience who will take the pathos in his film at face value.
Another thing is that I cannot approve the author’s approach. There is no point in mocking the long-obsolete genre, as well as the lack of specialized knowledge among the masses! A comedy that is funny only to its creator is hardly worthy of high praise. Whether it is half or four times shorter, one could praise the authors for their ability to create the effect of endlessly stretching time... but if the film is really long?
Nevertheless, the dull erotic banter of the CSTO win prizes, as it has happened dozens of times at festivals. But bad luck. So it's at the bottom of all movie lists (and deservedly).
But the author is not an idiot. He probably hoped that after the very same #39; outrageous & #39; scenes in the tent, the audience would understand his postirony. No, they didn’t want to, because somehow it hurts.
