The famous spy Maria Iosifovna Polyakova, who rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel of the GRU, devoted herself to the fight against the spread of fascism in Europe of the 30s and 40s of the XX century. About her difficult fate, viewers learn from the mouth of the scout herself, a voluminous interview with which, taken by Alexander Ostrovsky and is the basis of the film by Alexei Kititsev. Polyakova in practice mastered the basics of intelligence as an illegal agent in the early 30s. Trying to find out the secrets of Krupp armor, the scout masterfully recruited German officers and achieved great success, as a result of which her personal dossier was replenished with a record of a “specially gifted scout”. Having completed her training at the intelligence school and received the rank of senior lieutenant, Maria was sent to work in Switzerland, where shortly before the outbreak of World War II she managed to obtain and transfer to the USSR extremely important data on the Erlikon anti-aircraft gun, which is in service with the Wehrmacht.

Strength Test
When the Great Patriotic War began, the Soviet leadership envisaged the option of capturing Moscow by the Nazis. In this case, it was planned that Polyakov would become a Soviet resident in the occupied capital. An important place in the film is given to the love story of Maria Polyakova and her husband, Czech Joseph Detsk. This dedicated revolutionary and bright leader of the Comintern was no less outstanding figure. Their feelings have passed the real test of separation associated with the type of activity of the spouses. Unfortunately, this could not but affect their daughter Zlata, who grew up almost without seeing her parents. Joseph died in 1941 while performing a special mission in the German-occupied Polish town of Cecoltin.

After the war, Maria taught in intelligence school and retired in 1956. Polyakova’s fascinating interview in the film is complemented by declassified documents, new historical facts, and interesting filming in places where the resident woman worked.
