The main character is Mabuti Kema, formerly a special forces officer, now a hunter for illegal reels. The coils are miniaturized reactors that extract energy from the mysterious dimension of W. The monopoly on the production of coils is owned by an international corporation that strictly suppresses the circulation of counterfeit energy sources, so many private agencies are hunting for “illegals”. Kema also works for one of these agencies. He works with great pleasure, because the coils and the technique that works with them are fiercely hated after one tragic episode that forever changed his fate. And he would collect the reels further, but one day he meets a very strange robot girl on a mission, and, like many years ago, is involved in intrigues of an international scale, in a game in which the fate of reality itself is the stake.
The series is bright and colorful, like a superhero comic. And like a comic book, it's full of very cool, extravagant-looking and charismatic characters who sort things out through muzzle and gunfights. The main genre of “Dimensions W” is a mixture of action and drama, but in individual arches we will see the “robbery film”, and almost classic detective, and a mystical thriller. You will not be bored - the plot is unpredictable, full of mysteries and unexpected turns.
But above all, "Measurement W" is still an action movie. And the fighting scenes here are great. What is only the exotic weapon of the protagonist - throwing needles. With their help, he deals not only with armed bandits, but even with giant mechs! The rest of the characters in terms of originality of weapons do not lag behind - moles with bionic burrowing paws, flying "superman", various cyborgs ... Combat scenes are spectacular and devoid of anime convention - here no one pronounces pathetic slogans on a psychedelic background and does not announce the names of receptions. In this regard, “Measurement W” turned out to be quite “Western”, which is not surprising for a joint project with the Americans.
The series is rich in borrowing. The scene of defeating huge mechs with the help of tangled legs of cables is reminiscent of "The Geass Code" (although the idea itself is still from the fifth episode of "Star Wars" in 1980). Yes, and the OBCR of the African army resemble “knightly horses” from the same anime. The Loser's daughter looks like Lilith and Morrigan from the Darkstalkers game, and his own attire vaguely resembles ... the Zero suit all from the same "Code of Geass." "Superman" from America - no comment. And that’s just what I noticed, and my outlook on anime is not too great.
Yes, some elements are not new, but the "solyanka" itself is quite successful - after all, sometimes the main thing is not to be original, but to mix proven ingredients correctly.
The series is strong with heroes, action, worked out world, atmosphere and intriguing plot. But the semantic content is worse. Measurement W seems to raise a lot of important, interesting and often already classic problems for NF works: does a robot with full-fledged AI have a “soul” and can it be equated with a person; is progress a good, and if it is, is it unconditional; how seriously does a person have the right to interfere in nature, and should he be limited in this intervention to avoid global catastrophe? Alas, the series only deals with these topics, without offering clear answers and analysis. And many questions remain, the most important of which is how, in fact, the creators of the anime themselves relate to these problems, do they support Kema in his hatred of dangerous high technologies? Unfortunately, the ending of the series does not give any answer.
For me, the ending was completely incomprehensible. No, what the characters did is clear, but why they did it is not. The motivation of Kema’s wife is especially puzzling. So there is a feeling that the end of the series just did not think. It is possible that the anime will continue, but there is unlikely to explain anything further.
But it is still worth watching the “W dimension”. One of the reasons - cars Kema, even for us is a youngtimer Toyota 2000GT and quite modern by our standards, but already vintage for the characters of the series Lexus LFA. Realistically, with love and knowledge of matchmaking drawn sports cars - we can say, also "heroes" anime, and a kind of "favorites" of the main character, who sees in them the same relics of the past as he himself.
Result: a good multi-part anime fighter in the cyberpunk setting. Bright, stylish and interesting, but he is still far from a masterpiece. 8 out of 10
