This is my first Sean Penn film as a director, I know him as a good actor, but now I want to see him as a director. I generally have a belief that a good actor can not become a director, there are, of course, exceptions, Clint Eastwood for example, but still mostly it ends with one, two projects and a person understands that this is not his specialty and goes back to the acting service, but this is his fifth film, and it already indicates that he is at least confident in his abilities, which means something. Once again, he decided to turn to films with a historical background. This is the true story of Christopher Johnson McCandles from 1990-1992 in the same area. It was interesting to see Sean Penn as a director and screenwriter. It wasn't bad at all.
I am sure that each of us dreamed of getting away from all this bustle of the city, embarking on an endless journey, getting food with our own hands, and not putting everything ready in the supermarket in the food basket. So that no one touches you, no one disturbs you. That would be a wonderful life. Sometimes I dream, too. And this film is a guide to the ideal natural life. The hero walks around the country, meets people, incredible adventures in the wild. But this shows only one side of the coin.
Everything is very round in this film. It seems that for the hero of the film it all comes very easy, simple and fun. Everything is shown very precipitously, it seems that all these two years have been cut off and showed only the most interesting moments. That’s understandable, because it’s a movie, but still. Even in the same film “Dancing with Wolves”, the hero kept a diary and because of this everything became very clear and clear and the film looked much more holistic than this adventure film. But this is probably my only, albeit very important, claim.
The male role is well played. It can be seen with the naked eye that Emil Hirsch took a huge effort to show the character at the beginning of the film and at the very end of it. Such exhaustion in Alaska, just perfectly shown. Also a wonderful male supporting role, performed by Hal Holbrook, who played one of the people meeting on the way to Alexander Supertramp. I also wanted to say that very little screen time is devoted to secondary roles, mostly all attention is focused on the main character, this is also another omission of this film.
In general, the film is not bad in its content, the male role, a good musical design, well, it is painfully crumpled, and in some places delayed, but in general I liked the film.
