The lady is waiting John Cassavetes is a very fashionable director. I watched the drama “Premier” for a long time already, I really liked it, I remember it well, so I decided to join his work more and started with the film “The Child Waits”, which seemed to me a very ambiguous work. Dr. Clark hires pianist Jean Hansen as a music teacher for children with mental health problems. Outraged by the methods of treating children, Jean begins to conflict with the doctor, along the way getting closer to one of the young patients. Thanksgiving performance becomes a turning point in the relationship of the characters. There are no words, as well as emotions, so I will say everything briefly and directly. The film seemed to me two-sided, with ambiguous understanding, albeit vital, but in some places fake. Actually what I mean. On the one hand, the film is optimistic, if you look at it from this side. For a little over an hour, Cassavetes had been telling us that there was help for these children, that they could be cured (there was a hint of this), but as soon as we were shown an adult hospital, everything became clear. And why is it asked, then it was necessary to show all this beginning of the film, if its entire message is sharply cut off? But it's not that simple. If from a child’s point of view there is no meaning, then it means that there is meaning for adults, those very teachers of this boarding school for the mentally retarded. Perhaps it shows the way of searching for the meaning of life of the main character of the film Jean Hansen, which she has repeatedly hinted at. But then the film looks fake, because, in my opinion, spiritually she did nothing, and then it turns out that she is already the navel of the earth, if she put a scene about Thanksgiving. Still, it is clear that such a problem is very common and now the film is relevant, although it was shot 47 years ago, since there were clearly no fewer such children. But still, the film should be more specific. It must penetrate deeper, as one of the heroes of the film “I walk in Moscow” said. As, for example, a writer and a director must dig deep into the souls of the main characters, especially in potentially emotional films, and only the ending turned emotional here, no matter how much I scolded it, but I confess, snuck away, largely because of the scene of playing the piano of the heroine of actress Judy Garland. Although the whole film she did not look very much, but the last scenes she succeeded in fame. I'm going to say very emotionally. I also liked the secondary role of Gene Rowlands in the role of the mother of the same patient, which caused the conflict between the doctor and the music teacher. In general, for me, the film turned out to be ambiguous spiritually and morally. Not clear about the characters of the film, the children. On the one hand he is truthful and on the other he is false. Why not call the movie The Lady Waiting? I think in this film, only she won. But Cassavetes's handwriting feels even though I've only seen two movies. But that's clearly not his best work. Original
