How do you like me so far? The plot of the series is extremely simple - brave New York policeman Eddie Arlette goes to the shores of Foggy Albion, pursuing drug dealers who have eluded him.
Primary Englishmen are naturally terrified of the manners of a laid-back American. However, no one can deny that Eddie is the best detective Scotland Yard could ever dream of.
Department chief Nathaniel Johnson understands that an exile detective's abilities can lead him into a better-looking office, so the miracle foreigner gets a permanent job at Scotland Yard.
The somewhat exaggerated opposition of the old world to the new is quite amusing, and the forced neighborhood of Eddie with the charming Englishwoman Fiona, and his dog Pete with the Duchess cat gives the series additional sharpness.
What about Eddie Arlette? A true American. The character is open, responsive (helped the criminal Rudy fulfill a long-standing promise), tough (in the distribution of the queue to the bathroom), purposeful. Relentless to criminals. He did not have any connections to defame him.
His new partner, Monty Pippin, is a controversial character. He defines himself as a free, “eternally changing creature,” a “man with a clear conscience.” For all his lack of complexity in his personal life, Monty is very influenced by Victorian traditions with a clear code of social relations - not a word against his superiors, not a word to the head of the institution where he studied, plus full knowledge of the language of these closed societies - intonation, where the phrase "how your mother is doing" means a fair bashing.
The series turned out to be easy, pleasant and quite funny, with a lot of colorful English characters - from sexy Monnipenny to a thug who dreams of playing in the theater. I especially love the co-owners of this Scottish / American bar, any appearance on the screen of which ends in a good fight!
An additional plus is that the production of the US-UK series turned out to be more English than American. There is English specific humor, and a long period between episodes, which implies quality (in my understanding).
Special thanks to the studio(s) for the fact that the series was limited to one season. Creatures of this kind, where there is no clear, developing through line, become uninteresting after the 10th-15th series. There are too many funny detective series/series in the world. It's a good thing Eddie Arlette didn't become one of many. He's still Eddie Arlet!
