Carlo Goldoni was born on February 25, 1707 in Venice in the family of a doctor. Already from an early age he was interested in theater, already at the age of eight he tried to write the first play, and at an older age he even tried to run away from home with an acting troupe. At the insistence of his father, Goldoni studied medicine, then studied law in various Italian cities and later became a lawyer in his hometown. That's when he turned to drama. One of the first tragedies he wrote, Belisarius (1734), had some success, but he soon realized that he had a great penchant for comedy, and he created his first comedy in 1738. Legal practice, combined with diplomatic assignments, took a lot of time and effort, and in 1746 Carlo Goldoni accepted the offer of the Venetian Theatre of San Angelo and began to write plays for it, and from 1748 he also worked for the Theatre of St. Luke. The playwright, considering that the Italian scene needs changes, took Molière’s comedy as a model in his works. Carlo Goldoni is rightly considered a reformer of the Italian theater, who replaced the improvised comedy del arte, or comedy of masks, with a dramaturgy with a stable text, real human characters, content imbued with educational ideas, witty criticism of the vices of modern society. In his native city he created works that made him literary fame. Among the masterpieces of this period - "The Family of Antiquaria", "Coffee", "The Innkeeper", "Samodoury", "New Apartment", "Kyodzhinsk skirmishes", "The Servant of Two Lords". In 1762, Goldoni moved to Paris, where he served as a playwright at the Italian Theatre, and later taught Italian to the royal daughters. The comedy “Grumpy Benefactor” (1771) brought him European fame. In France he wrote "Memoirs of Carlo Goldoni" (1784-87). Carlo Goldoni created 267 plays. Louis XVI ordered the playwright to pay a pension, which he lived in Versailles. The French Revolution deprived Goldoni of this income. Later, the Convention decided to resume the payment of pensions, but for the playwright it did not matter - the day before, on February 6, 1793, he died in Versailles. .
