In 1948, after attending a philosophy course in graduate school, Iris was elected a board member at Oxford College. There she worked as a teacher until 1963, when she began writing. From 1963 to 1967, Iris Murdoch lectured at the Royal College of Art.
The first publication of the writer, published in 1953, was called “Sartre – Romantic Rationalist”, but the creative debut is considered to be the novel “Under the Net” in 1954. Iris’ early works: Sand Castle, Aloe and the Green had impeccable style and small volumes.
In 1958, one of the most successful novels, The Bell, was published, depicting the religious community of England. This story has been filmed.
In 1961, the writer worked on the work “Severed Head”, where she touched on the theory of the Jung archipelagos. A little later this book was converted into a play.
Characters in the works of the author always realistically fit into the portraits of people, she also quite often used Gothic and fantasy elements.
In the book The Unicorn, written in 1963, the characters fall into a medieval world of unforeseen circumstances and accidents. In 1965, in the work “Time of Angels” in the role of the main character is a strange priest who worships the devil. As a result, he is killed by his own daughter with an increased dose of sleeping pills.
Murdoch has written 26 novels. In 2001, the film “Iris” was filmed about her life, the role of the writer was played by Judy Dench and Kate Winslet, for which both received an Oscar nomination.
