In the life of Unica Zurn there was a lot of adventure, variety and fun. But there was also pain, fear, suffering and despair. In general, we can say that this talented writer, sculptor and artist all her life performed in tragicomedy. Unika is among the host of famous women of the twentieth century, but few of them, except that Frida Kahlo, had to go through so much.
Unika Zürn was born on July 6, 1916 in Berlin. Her childhood could be called perfect: a wealthy loving family, a mansion, a father who brings many oriental trinkets. However, the girl from childhood suffered from schizophrenia, expressed in split personality and paranoia.
After graduation, she worked as an editor and director of commercials. In 1942, Unika married. But such a complex nature was impossible to get along with a simple engineer, and three years later she divorced, leaving two children in the care of her husband.
After the divorce, Unika lived on feuilleton fees. In 1953, she met the famous surrealist artist Hans Bellmer. This meeting was fatal for Unica Zurn. They fell in love and moved to Paris. Hans introduced her to the creative elite of the time and made her his model. However, Unica's disease and Bellmer's alcoholism made their relationship unbearable. For 17 years, the couple constantly fought and broke up. After a failed abortion and a heart attack by Hans (the artist was completely paralyzed), Unica committed suicide by jumping out of a window. She was buried in Paris in the Pierre-Lachaise cemetery, and five years later Hans Bellmer was next to her. On their common grave is written: "My love will follow you into eternity."
The most famous works of Unica Zurn were the novels “Jasmine Man”, “Dark Spring”, “Red dot on a white background”.
