Gottfried August Buerger was born on December 31, 1747 in Molmersvend, near Halberstadt, in the family of a pastor. From 1764 he studied theology at Halle, and from 1768 he studied law at the University of Göttingen. After receiving a law degree, Burger served 12 years as an official in the district administration. In 1784 he became an assistant professor at the University of Göttingen, lecturing on aesthetics. After receiving a law degree, Burger served 12 years as an official in the district administration. In 1784 he became an assistant professor at the University of Göttingen, lecturing on aesthetics. Famous ballads G.-A. Burger, who became one of the exponents of the ideas "Storm and onslaught"; among them - "Lenor" (1773; Russian translation V.A. Zhukovsky, 1831), "Song of the brave" (1777), "Daughter of the pastor from Taubenhain" (1781), "Wild Hunter" (1786). He also translated “Macbeth” by W. Shakespeare, fragments of the “Iliad” and “Odyssey”. In 1786 he published a reworking of R.E. Raspe's book - satirical episodes of the novel about Munchausen. The last years of his life were overshadowed by an unsuccessful third marriage, poverty, illness, as well as criticism of his work by F. Schiller.
