Alexei Petrovich Lebedev was born on March 2, 1845 in the village of Ochakov, Moscow district in the family of a priest. He received his education at the Perervin Theological School, then at the Moscow Theological Seminary and the Moscow Theological Academy. Alexei Petrovich Lebedev was born on March 2, 1845 in the village of Ochakov, Moscow district in the family of a priest. He received his education at the Perervin Theological School, then at the Moscow Theological Seminary and the Moscow Theological Academy. After graduating from the Academy in 1870, he was appointed to the Department of Ancient Church History. Professor A.P. Lebedev was popular among students, his audience was one of the most visited. He was the only professor in the Academy who annually offered new courses, more than ten masters graduated from his “school”, five of his students occupied departments in higher educational institutions of St. Petersburg, Moscow and Odessa. Professor Lebedev served at the Moscow Theological Academy for twenty-five years.
On the works of A.P. Lebedev on the history of the Church, whole generations were brought up. Describing the scientific and literary activity and merits of A.P. Lebedev in the field of church-historical science, Professor A.A. Spassky wrote: “He not only raised Russian science to the proper height, but also attracted the attention of Western scholars to it, making it a pan-European phenomenon.”
Alexei Petrovich Lebedev died on July 14, 1908 after a short serious illness.
