Michael Marshall Smith was born in 1965 in Nutsford, Cheshire, United Kingdom. When he was about a year old, the family moved to the United States (first to Illinois, then to Florida), then the Smiths lived in South Africa and Australia, and in the early 1970s finally moved to England. Michael Marshall Smith was educated at Cambridge, where he studied philosophy and socio-political sciences at Kings College. While studying, he became a member of the comedy revue "Cambridge Footlights", so it is not surprising that Smith later appeared on BBC radio, where he wrote and appeared in comedy programs. The Dark Land (1992) was the first short story by Michael Marshall Smith to be accepted for publication, but earlier, in 1991, the story “The Man Who Drew Cats” was published, which received the British Fantasy Award in the same year. His first novel, “Only Forward,” won the August Derleth Prize in 1995. His second novel, Spares, was acquired in 1996 by Steven Spielberg’s Dreamwork. Other books by Michael Marshall Smith include the novel One of Us and a collection of short stories.
