Arto Paasilinna was born on April 20, 1942. His father was a policeman. He passed away, leaving his wife eight children, at the age of 49, when Artaud was only nine years old. After graduation, Paasilinna got a job as a newspaper editor. Having gained experience, he began to publish in various publications. Interestingly, four of his brothers also went on the path of writing. His brother Erno was no less famous in Finland than he was, although he was not published in such huge print runs. The work of the writer did not immediately bring tangible profit, so Artaud had to work in life as a journalist, a winemaker, and a logger. But all this, of course, was useful to the writer for his work.
He later wrote one novel a year. The editors were looking forward to a new bestseller from Artaud each year, knowing that the book would be warmly received by readers, sold in large circulation and translated into many languages.
The style of Paasilinna’s works is unique in its kind. The images of his compatriots, as a rule, he paints in rather ironic and gloomy colors. Heroes of his drinkers, prone to depressive moods, inhibited and boring. However, oddly enough, the reader is not offended by such characters, since self-criticism and humor are in the blood of the Finnish people.
Among the most popular novels of the writer are “The Year of the Rabbit”, “The Fury of a Happy Man”.
“Forest of Hanged Foxes”, “Son of the Thunder God”, “Tender Poisoner”, “Adorable Suicide with Friends”, “Summer of a Laughing Cow”, “Pastor Huuskonen’s Bear”, “Adam and Eve”, “The World’s Best Village”, “Clumsy Guardian Angel”, “Cold Nerves, Hot Blood”.
