Born in Bisby, Arizona. He graduated from the University of West Texas, as well as the universities of New Mexico and Colorado. The first non-fiction publication is the short story Metal Man (1928, Amazing Stories), written under the obvious influence of A. Merritt. Williamson's stories were mainly published in "Amazing Stones", as well as in "Science Wonder Stories", "Astounding Science Fiction" and many other journals. Of the major works of the pre-war period, his series “Legions of Space” is best known. The first book of the same name with the name of the entire cycle was published in 1934 in "Astounding Science Fiction", then appeared "Inhabitants of Space" and "One against the Legion" (1936 and 1939, ibid.). In 1983, the Queen of the Legion was added to them, a thing much weaker than the first three, beloved by readers due to the scale of the design and color of the characters. For more than 60 years of creative activity, Williamson published an impressive number of works, partly in collaboration with James Gunn ("Star Bridge") and Frederick Pop (three series - "Depth", "Child of the Stars", "Cuckoo Saga" and a number of individual novels). He is one of the founders of the space opera genre, but his work goes far beyond certain themes and the scope of the genre, especially since the early 80s. In 1976, Williamson was awarded the Nebula Award and in 1994 the World Fantasy Award.
