Screenwriter, director, poet, prose writer. Member of the Guild of Film Directors of Russia. He was born on August 23, 1966 in Kazan. 10 years worked as a doctor in clinics of Kazan. He studied film drama in absentia at VGIK. In 1999, he entered the course to Alexei Yurevich German, moved to Moscow. In 2001 he graduated from the Higher Courses of Screenwriters and Directors, 2001 (workshop of Alexei German and Svetlana Karmalita).

Cannes Film Festival resident, 2002 - 2003. The Cannes Film Festival celebrated the films (official selection): "Odya", 2003 and "Waltz", 2001. A film by Odeh (2003). It was shown in the program “Directors’ Fortnight” of the 56th Cannes Festival.
In 2007, E. Bartenev together with the director of the documentary film studio A. Gusev held a 3-day master class as part of the student film festival "Mirror". As part of the master class (which was attended by groups from 5 countries), the participants filmed 6 short films: "Non-accident" - winner of the festival "Mirror 2007" (as part of the master class), "You", "Dinner Time", "Indifference", "It's never late to close the door" and "Uncertainty".
Currently, Bartenev is a director of the St. Petersburg Studio of Documentary Films, as well as a teacher of the Department of "Cinema and Photo Arts" at SPbSUKI.
