Gatti Marcello Gatti – Italian cinematographer, three-time winner of the Silver Ribbon Award, awarded by the Italian National Association of Film Journalists – for films The Battle of Algeria "Sierra Maestra" and "Deceit." He was also nominated for this award for “Strange Night.” Gatti was born on 9 February 1924 and died on 26 November 2013. Gatti was born on 9 February 1924 and died on 26 November 2013. He made his film debut as an assistant operator in the early 1940s and as a cameraman in 1953. In 1943, his career was brutally interrupted by the intervention of the authorities - Marcello was sentenced to five years in prison for damaging the portrait of dictator Benito Mussolini, posted at the Cinecitta film studio. Later, the arrest was replaced by exile.
Gatti is best known for his collaboration with director Gilberto Pontecorvo, with whom he directed The Battle of Algeria. He has also worked with Roman Polanski, Damiano Damiani, Luigi Zampa, Nanni Loy.
