Leslie Cheung was born on September 12, 1956 in Hong Kong. The family raised ten children, among whom Leslie was the youngest. Leslie Cheung was born on September 12, 1956 in Hong Kong. The family raised ten children, among whom Leslie was the youngest. But Leslie’s mother was not too satisfied, and so the parents divorced when the child was very young.
Until the age of thirteen, Leslie studied at the Hong Kong Rosarihill School, and then at the English boarding house at Eccles Hall School. Having successfully graduated from high school and received a scholarship to study at the university, he entered the Faculty of Industrial Design at the University of Leeds.
There was not enough money, and in parallel with his studies he worked as a bartender in a restaurant, and also sang on weekends.
He did not go to university for a year because he had to take care of his paralyzed father.
Leslie first appeared on the screen in 1978 in the film “Hong lou chun shang chun”. After that, he began to appear regularly in films. He was particularly successful in his roles in mystical films with elements of martial arts: “Bright Future 2: Hurricane Fire”, “Chinese Ghost Story”, “Bright Future”, “Merry Christmas!”, “Rumyan”, “Fatal Love”.
Fame covered the actor after the film “Goodbye, my concubine”. This film won the main prize at the Cannes Festival in 1993. Leslie so believably played the main effeminate character that 1993 in the movie world was dubbed the “Year of Chinese Transvestites”.
Four years later, Leslie played in another film about same-sex love.

In 2003, at the forty-sixth year of his life, the actor committed suicide, jumping from the 24th floor. In 2005, Leslie Chung was voted the most beloved actor in 100 years of Chinese cinema.
