He was born on November 8, 1936. In 1958 he graduated with honors from college and in 1961 from the law faculty of the University of Chicago. In the same year, he was admitted to the New York Bar Association and served as a federal judge in the District Court for the District of New Jersey and in the United States Court in Berlin. During this period of his career, Stern presided over the hijacking case, the only case heard by a U.S. court in the U.S.- and Allied-controlled West Berlin sector. On this case, he wrote a book “The Court in Berlin”, later put in the basis of the film of the same name.
Since 1987, Stern has been practicing private law. In addition to the book already mentioned, he is the author of a number of publications on the legal profession.
