Max was always trying to get at least some significant role in the movie, but for him it was problematic because of the very small height for a man – 158 cm. He was offered mostly teenage roles. In July 1905, the comedy “The first outing of the gymnasium” was released, it lasted only five minutes, but made this time laugh from the heart of the viewer. Then came two short comedies “Poison” and “Death of the bullfighter”.
Fame fell like snow on his head. In the next film, Max had to play a skater. But he didn’t know how to stand on skates. His twenty-minute torment was filmed by a movie camera, and this spectacle caused homeric laughter in the hall.
In 1908, Linder took the place of the comedian Andre Dida, who left for Italy, and since then he has not removed the crown of the king of laughter. The actor enjoyed incredible popularity among the beautiful half of humanity. Women of all ages and classes fell in love with him. After all, neither his small height nor other shortcomings were visible on the screen, he was absolutely charming, elegant and irresistible.
Max Linder is considered the first cinematic actor. His style was never repeated by any of the silent movie stars who came to the screen later. He was an idol and idol of the Parisian public.
In 1910-1913, the actor visited with his films and theatrical productions in Russia, Germany, Spain. At the viewing of his paintings “Max is a victim of quinine”, “Max is a virtuoso”, “Max is a bullfighter” there was a constant laugh. However, such a grandiose fame and boundless love turned into a drug effect for Linder. After the First World War, he continued to act in different countries, but the films did not bring him the same success. Losing popularity, he fell into a severe depression and on October 30, 1925, committed suicide, slitting the veins of himself and his young twenty-year-old wife.
His last film, The Circus King, was released the year he died.
