Born in Brno in 1929. He took an active part in the Prague events of 1968. In 1975 he emigrated to France.
He debuted in literature as a poet, releasing in the 50s books of poems “Man: A Huge Garden” (1953), “The Last May” (1955) and “Monologues” (1957). In 1962 he published the play “Kluchari”, in 1965 – the novel “Joke”; during the 60-70s he published a total of about a dozen books. He gained worldwide fame after the publication in 1984 of the novel “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”.
